Back in 1744, Benjamin Franklin made some significant improvements to the ordinary stove and his concepts helped make the cast iron stove the main heat source for buildings rather than the fireplace. Old Ben figured out how to obtain more energy from the fire and heat rooms more effectively.
In the late 1800s, the cast-iron stove moved to the cellar and became the furnace. The heated air from the stove would filter up through grills in the floor. Soon the hot air would be ducted to other parts of the building, including upper floors, and circulated by natural convection. In the early 1900s an added blower turned this concept into the modern forced air central heating system.
